Love at First Bite: How Taco Mensch Started
This was Taco Mensch’s very first tour in February 2019.
This week marks six years since Taco Mensch gave its first taco tour in Roma Norte. Our founder, Avidan Lebenthal, launched the business as an Airbnb Experience in 2019 (you can read more about his story here). Although he was born in Mexico City, Avidan spent many years living in other countries and working in restaurants and hospitality worldwide. When he returned to Mexico City, he noticed a gap in the tourism industry.
Avidan noticed that thousands of tourists were arriving in CDMX every month with one main mission: to eat. Yet, they faced some barriers. Most visitors spoke minimal Spanish, and Mexico City can be incredibly overwhelming at first. When it comes to eating the best tacos the city has to offer, where do you even begin?
To solve this problem, Avidan created a taco tour that efficiently curated the best spots for you WITH a generous helping of history, storytelling, and authentic connection. After all, the word “mensch” means a wholesome, good person—so why not build a business around that principle? Really good humans, leading phenomenal tours.
More Than Just Tacos
As Taco Mensch has evolved, one thing has become clear: our experience is about more than just eating the best suadero, pastor or quesadillas that Mexico City has to offer. Equally important are the connections made between guests, guides, and our vendors. Avidan always says:
"The tacos are just an excuse for everyone to connect and have a great time."
Even though Taco Mensch started with tacos taking center stage, we have added two new tours that are heavier on history, art and architecture.
